WARD 7 TRUSTEE PRESENTS TO THE SCARBOUROGH SARS COMMUNITY SUMMIT

Mike Del Grande, Trustee and former Chair of the TCDSB who lives very near to Scarborough Grace Hospital was invited to a SARS summit hosted by local MP Jim Karygiannis. Attendance included Dalton McGinty , Gerry Philips, Alvin Curling and Norm Kelly along with a number of representatives from various chamber of commerce organizations and other local business and community leaders.

"We have had a void in leadership and my proposals include the following to address the void:

• Scarborough Grace Hospital needs to be opened as soon as possible. This hospital has been at the center of the SARS outbreak and its opening would signal a positive sign that the virus has been controlled.

• Toronto airport, bus and train terminals need to screen all travelers. Singapore and Hong Kong are screening all travelers. Flyers at the airport are inadequate and do not send a strong message that we are vigilant in our monitoring of travelers.

• All levels of Government need to have a "Welcome Back Campaign" which should run under the banner head "Toronto- Welcome To My Home" All Toronto residences should be encourage to post banners welcoming people to their homes.

• We need welcome back promotions and discounts from Hotels, Restaurants and Government institutions like the Science Center, ROM, Art Gallery of Ontario etc.

• A celebration party/rally honoring our hero's. To date we have not seen a true Rudolph Guilliani.

• Focus on the Chinese Community to start supporting their own community. We need Canadian media to counter act against the negative news broadcasts from Hong Kong.

We need to support businesses with a hand up not a hand out by

o Loan guarantees from the government for all businesses hurt by SARS.

o Deferment of the GST/PST payments over a longer time frame.

o Financial Assistance not only for quarantined individuals but also for people who have been laid off because of the downturn in business.

o A small hotel levy to be used for destination marketing after the current government injection has expired
